Program

8 premieres under the heading COMMON SENSES shift perspectives and reflect the status quo of our social interactions. Guests from philosophy and science stimulate our thinking with impulses. You can also expect a “kiosk of unfulfilled wishes”, a floating light-space installation, bar, music, DJs and appetizers in the Discourse Kitchen.

Audience members can experience several short monologues and specials in close succession each evening – we recommend day tickets for the best festival experience.

In addition to the festival trailer, you can find Byung-Chul Han’s opening speech as a video as well as selected press reviews of the festival here.

Should my robot be like me? Playing with science, fiction and a companionship bot, Post Theater and Taiwanese performer Po Fu Wu explore the nature of our new companions in a not-too-distant future.

NO MAN IS AN iSLAND tells the story of a diverse robot on an island in the Pacific Ocean, 160 kilometers off the Chinese mainland. It opposes the illusion of the “neutrality” of intelligent machines to an identity utopia. But who decides what character and identity a robot should have? Does the manufacturer, the owner, or the bot itself determine this? And should a cultural origin be felt?

Again and again, AI applications are accused of racism or at least prejudiced text or image production - “machine learning” ultimately learns from humans. If AI soon leaves the production halls of industry as robotics: How much leeway should customers have to embed their own values in the systems and thus create personality? How strict should the bot be with children? How polite to strangers? And: what status will the increasingly successful imitation of real people have over time: programmed worker or emancipated comrade? And do we even want humans to be their role models?

Post Theater works at the intersection of theater and technology. Founded in New York, the company soon moved to Berlin. Under the direction of Hiroko Tanahashi and Max Schumacher, over 50 plays have been presented in 60 cities in 20 countries worldwide, e.g. 2019 “Nonuments”, where the audience could co-design a virtual document via smartphones, 2021 “Spookai”, a course about the ensoulment of things, 2022 “SepulTour”, a play about funeral cultures of a heterogeneous society and “Fuchsbau” about foxes and humans, followed in summer 2023 by “Animal Intelligence” about smart animals and their relationship to AI. www.posttheater.com
